If you have not heard of Betty White then you were born too late. This lady had ruled over Hollywood for over half a century. Apart from having multiple amounts of most of the prestigious awards (yes, I am talking Academy, Grammy, Screen Actors Guild, and Emmys here), she has given us unforgettable characters since the 40s. In a male-dominated industry, this woman sits on the title of ‘Mayor of Hollywood’.
Here are some of the most savage lessons she has dished out to the younger generations.
“I didn’t know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time.”
Betty knows that the best way to be evergreen is to be open-minded. And she also knows that being open-minded doesn’t mean lacking an opinion.
“Why do people say ‘grow some balls’? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you wanna be tough, grow a vagina. Those things can take a pounding.”
Now there is something that feminists can use. Betty White gave us the best lesson about making it as a woman in a man’s world.
“Doing drama is, in a sense, easier. In doing comedy, if you don’t get that laugh, there’s something wrong.”
Betty White knows how hard-won laughter is. She understands the responsibilities associated with it as well.
“Animals don’t lie. Animals don’t criticize. If animals have moody days, they handle them better than humans do.”
Human beings are superior to other species has been our argument so far. But Betty knows not to be hypocritical.
“I have a two-story house and a bad memory, so I’m up and down those stairs all the time. That’s my exercise.”
Hitting the gym in gears sounds so cool. However, Betty reminds us that fitness is a lifestyle factor, not a style factor.
“The bottom line is, I’m blessed with good health. On top of that, I don’t go around thinking ‘Oh, I’m 90, I better do this or I better do that.’ I’m just Betty. I’m the same Betty that I’ve always been. Take it or leave it.”
Betty White reveals the secret to a healthy life- being content, happy, and stress-free. It certainly leads to a good long life.
“You can always tell about somebody by the way they put their hands on an animal.”
It is hard to recognize kind people in this cruel world. So how people treat an animal, show kindness expecting nothing in return can show us who they really are.
“People have told me ‘Betty, Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with old friends…’ At my age, if I wanted to keep in touch with old friends, I’d need a Ouija Board.”
Betty While clearly does not look at this world with rose spangled glasses. She is real. She can look at the good and the ugly with equal clarity.
“Wilderness is harder and harder to find these days on this beautiful planet, and we’re abusing our planet to the point of almost no return.”
Betty White was way ahead of her time. I might even say that she was the Greta Thunberg of her time.
“Retirement is not in my vocabulary. They aren’t going to get rid of me that way.”
You are never too old to do what you love to do. You just need to find a new approach to it.
“I think it’s your mental attitude. So many of us start dreading age in high school and that’s a waste of a lovely life. ‘Oh… I’m 30, oh, I’m 40, oh, 50.’ Make the most of it.”
Age is just a number. Betty makes it clear that she will not let it dictate her life.
“All creatures must learn to coexist. That’s why the brown bear and the field mouse can share their lives in harmony. Of course, they can’t mate or the mice would explode.”
Coexistence does not mean you must invite each over to dinner parties. Just a little consideration and civic sense are enough.
“My mother always used to say, ‘The older you get, the better you get. Unless you’re a banana’.”
Betty and her mom sure knew how to give advice. Now that is a piece of advice with layers of interpretation.
“The audience today has heard every joke. They know every plot. They know where you’re going before you even start. That’s a tough audience to surprise, and a tough audience to write for. It’s much more competitive now, because the audience is so much more – I want to say ‘sophisticated’.”
Betty is so good because she was not only aware of what she wanted to show but also what others wanted to see. That is a prime requirement in artistic fields.
“The writers are the stars of every really successful sitcom.”
Writing is the most underpaid and under-acknowledged profession when surprisingly it is the site of origin of every great idea. Entire industries are based on types of writing. Betty White knows their worth.
